Netflix Cable Girls: The 20's, fashion, and social changes

Vi el primer capítulo sin ponerle toda mi atención ya que por mientras

hacía otras cosas en casa, incluso con algo de escepticismo,

¡aún así me encantó!

I watched the first episode feeling somehow skeptical, and not

paying that much of attention since I was doing house shores... but still

it managed to captivate me!

Podríamos decir que llegué por la moda y mi fasinación por los años 20, pero me quedé a verla por la evolución de los roles sociales, por la curiosidad de la vida en otros tiempos, que al final resultaron no ser tan diferentes de los nuestros en algunos aspectos.

So in a way I came for the fashion and my fascination for the 1920's , but I stayed because of the evolution of the society depicted in the serie, and my ever present curiosity on how life in other times must have been... though at the end it turns out that some things are not very different now.

"Las Chicas del Cable" en parte llegó a tiempo para compensar el "hueco" que me dejó "Downton Abbey" después de sus 6 temporadas. Así que si ustedes también son fans de la serie británica, esta serie española de Netlfix les va a caer bien.
"Cable Girls" came to my tv to compensate the hole that I was left with after watching the 6 seasons of "Downton Abbey". So If you are aso a huge fan of the British series, you will enjoy this Netflix show as well.

Una sociedad fragmentada / A fragmented society

La serie tiene lugar en España de los años veinte. Mientras que en Estados Unidos se vivía con desenfreno, aprovechando la bonanza económica, en Europa la democracia ganaba popularidad, pero en Madrid ni la modernidad, ni los billetes fluían con tan libremente. Las antiguas estructuras sociales regidas por la religión y la monarquía seguían vigentes, el establecimiento de la dictadura militar de Miguel Primo de Rivera en 1923, nos dan una idea de la situación social de España, aún caracterízada por el contraste de la burguesía y la clase trabajadora, entre ellos los anarquistas.
La economía española se modernizaba a mayor velocidad que su sociedad, al cambiar a prácticas más modernas con precios controlados por el gobierno, lo cuál le llevaría a finanzas más properas a mediados de la década.

The story takes place in Spain during the 1920's. While USA was living la vida loca thanks to their economical boom, and democracy was gaining popularity in Europe, but in Madrid the modernity and the money was taking longer to make it through its society. The old social structures based on religion and Monarchy were still standing strong, and in 1923 a military dictatorship was established with Miguel Primo de Rivera, which gives us an idea of the social mood in Spain at the time still known for the admiration of the burgeoisie and the contrast of the working people of the proletariat, amongst them the anarchists. Spanish economy was turning to the modern ways faster than other structures, and thanks to the goverment controlling the prices of basically everything, they were able to set the standard for years to come, and also translating in an economical recovery by halfway the decade.

Roles sociales / Social roles

La historia comienza con la llegada de Lidia Aguilar a la Companía de Teléfonos, dónde forja una fuerte amistad con otras telefonistas, cada una envuelta en las propias expectativas familiares. A pesar de que en momentos la serie se siente un poco telenovelezca, las actuaciones son buenas y la relación entre los pesonajes captura.

En la primera temporada, se transmite ese optimismo sobre el porvenir de las mujeres, de que se puede ser independiente, de que por medio del trabajo y el esfuerzo combinando los roles clásicos de la mujer, se pueden alcanzar mejores oportunidades, y porque no la ~~igualdad~~ equidad. Como también se representa el otro lado de la moneda, familias que necesitan que su hija o nieta (el caso de Marga Suárez) salga del pueblo a trabajar a la ciudad ya que no tienen forma de sobrellevar los gastos ni tampoco tienen con quién "casar" a la chica para que un hombre "se haga cargo" de ella.

The story begins with the arrival of Lidia Aguilar to the Telephone Company, where she establishes a strong friendship with other telephonists, each one of them wrapped up in their family's and social expectations. Though from time to time the show seems to be a bit soapy, the acting is pretty good, and the relationship between the characters will keep you hooked.

Throughout the first season, the optimism of a new era for women is well transmited, the idea of women being independent as a real possibility, considering work and a mix of the classical social roles as the meas to reach better opportunities and even ~~equality~~ equity. Just like it also shows the other side of the glass, those families who find themselves in the need of sending their daughters and grandaughters to the city to work, because they just don´t have the means to support them or do not have a possible husband to feed thew, which is the case of Marga Suárez.

También se representa el machismo en diferentes formas, desde la violencia intrafamiliar hasta una súper vigente, el machismo perpetuado por las mismas mujeres. Como es el caso de Carolina, quién ve en sus compañeras mujeres una eterna competencia, y quién está dispuesta a ponerse en situaciones denigrantes si conllevan la posibilidad de obtener algún beneficio.

Mientras que para Carlota Rodríguez el poder trabajar como telefonista implica una confrontación a las creencias de sus padres, al poner en riesgo la reputación de una familia de renombre al tener una hija que trabaja por gusto. Elisa Cifuentes, una de las herederas de la Compañía Telefónica, vive en una situación similar, al padecer de una condición especial, que básicamente es ser una mujer con iniciativa.

Me parece que el éxito de la historia de las Chicas del Cable, es que si bien transcurre en los cambiantes años 20, bien podría tener lugar en los 60's con la pastilla anticonceptiva, como otro de mis shows favoritos: Panam, o incluso ahora en los 2000 y tantos. Pero por favor no me malentiendan, además de la historia, los vestuarios están impresionantes, el ambiente y las locaciones están muy bien logrados, y ese toque estilo Baz Luhrmann en Romeo + Juliet, de agregar música moderna a algo antiguo, también me encantó. Definitivamente "Las Chicas del Cable" forma parte de mis series favoritas.

Malechauvinism is also well represented, in many of its forms from domestic violence to a more subtle but very current behavior, the malechuvinism perpetuated by women ourselves. Which brings us to Carolina's character, who sees in her women coworkers a threat and as opponents, and who is also willing to put herself in adegrading situations if any of them can bring her any sort of benefit.
Meanwhile for Carlota Rodríguez working as a cable girl equals to fighting her family's old ways, who see her job as a threat to their social status and a shame. Elisa Cifuentes one of the Telephone Company heiress finds herself in a similar situation, while being medicated and treated like a child just for suffering a special condition, being a woman with initiative.

It seems to me that most of the success of "Cable Girls" is that just like it takes place in the 1920's filled with social change, it could also take place in the 1960's with the birth control pill (just like one of my other favorite shows: Panam), or even now in the two-thousands-and-something. But please don´t get me wrong, the setting and costume design are great, I also like that Baz Luhrmann touch of adding modern music to it. Definetly, Cable Girls is one of my new favorites.

Vestidas para la Nueva Era / Dressing for a new era

Con "Downton Abbey" tuvimos la satisfacción de ver los lindísimos vestuarios para cada ocasión en la vida de la burgesía, el moderno pero siempre elegante estilo de Mary me encanta. Ahora con "Las Chcias del Cable" me gustó mucho ver los vestuarios adecuados a cada personaje y su historia. Soy bien fan del estilo de Carlota, de la elegancia sin esfuerzo de Sara y la presencia de Lidia.

Thanks to "Downtown Abbey" we had the great satisfaction of watching and appreciating the lovely costumes for each ocation on the daily life of a burgeoise family. The always elegant and yet modern style of Lady Mary is my favorite. So now with "Cable Gils" I really enjoyed gazing the costumes for each character and their own story and backgrounds. I'm a huge fan of Carlota's style, the effortless elegance of Sara Millán and the wonderful presence of Lidia.

Los galanes de la serie, Francisco gómez y Carlos Cifuentes, siempre muy bien vestidos. // The very dapper gentlemen of Cable Girls.

La humildad y sencillez campirana del vestuario de Marga contrasta con el vestuario más sofisticado de las otras telefonistas. // The simplicity of Marga's outfit contrasts with the sophisticated looks worn by the city girls.

Vean que belleza de vestuarios, yo me pondría el look completo de Sara o de arlota cualquier día de estos! // Just look at those costumes! Every detail of it I love! I would wear any given day the complete look that Sara or Carlota are sporting!
